ISU’S
DANIEL NAMED ATHLETE OF WEEK
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Indiana State University’s
Steve Daniel, a junior from Decatur (MacArthur), Illinois, was named
the Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week in the field
events for men’s track and field.
Daniel became a provisional qualifier for the
NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a leap of 50-feet-11
inches (15.52 meters) in the Triple Jump at the Indiana Team Classic
held at Indiana University last Saturday. Daniel finished just
behind Indiana’s Kyle Jenkins (52-feet-1/2 inch) with teammates
Paladin Jordan (48-feet-6 inches) and Corey Dowden (47-feet-4
inches) finishing third and fourth respectively.
Derek Johnson of Drake was named the MVC
Athlete of the Week for track for the men. SIU’s Brittany Riley
(field) and Jamie Hutchinson of the University of Northern Iowa
(track) were honored for the women.
Also nominated from Indiana State were:
‑Erica Moore (SULLIVAN, IND. /freshman)
finished third in the women’s 600 meters at the Indiana Team Classic
with a time of 1:34.00 in a race where the top four placers were
within two-tenths of a second. The time was the second fastest in
school history.
‑Kylie Hutson (TERRE HAUTE/Freshman) finished
in a tie for third in the women’s pole vault at the Indiana Team.
Competing against five Big Ten teams and two from the SEC, Hutson
had a vault of 12-feet-7 inches (3.85 meters).
Jordan Fife (SEYMOUR, IND. /Senior) paced the
Indiana State University men’s team by winning the mile run at the
Indiana Team Classic. Fife was in fourth place heading into the
final quarter but ran a :57 final quarter and a :27 last 200 to come
from behind and post the win in 4:07.66.
Indiana State will be competing in the Purdue
Triangular (Gene Edmonds Cup) on Saturday.
