FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYCAMORES COMPETE AT ALEX WILSON INVITATIONAL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana State track and
field teams competed at the Alex Wilson Last Chance meet at Notre
Dame University this weekend and didn’t quite get the results that
they were hoping for.
One of the Sycamores who had already clinched a
provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships was
Terre Haute freshman Kylie Hutson. However, Hutson injured her ankle
in warmups for the women’s pole vault today.
“It is a severe sprain so she was not able to
compete,” women’s coach John Gartland said. “She is tied for 13th
going into the NCAA’s and may still be invited to compete. However,
we will just have to wait until Monday night to see if she is
invited and then have to make a determination if she is able to
compete.”
The highlight for the Lady Sycamores was the
performance of Erica Moore, who won the pentathlon at the Missouri
Valley Conference championships last weekend in Carbondale, Ill.
Moore ran in the 800 meters and finished in eight with a time of
2:09.49, the second fastest time in ISU history.
The men did have a new school record
established on Saturday as Sean Wright finished fourth in the 400
meters with a time of 47.01. That broke the mark set by Dwight
Williams in the early 1980s. The time was also surpassed the
provisional qualifying mark but he sits in about 25th
place.
In the triple jump, Paladin Jordan was fourth
with a leap of 51-feet-2 ¾. Jordan, Steve Daniel, who was seventh
Saturday despite a sore hamstring, and Cory Dowden, who was ninth
overall, have each achieved provisional marks in the triple jump
“We will have to wait and see who gets an
invitation to the championships and who doesn’t,” men’s coach John
McNichols said. “They are a long shot to get an invitation but you
just never know.”
In his final indoor meet for Indiana State,
Jordan Fife did not have the kind of race he usually has in the
mile. Fife was not placed in one of the fastest heats and had to
take the race early.
“He was boxed in by some of the other runners,
which they are taught to do, and finished fifth in the heat and 17th
overall,” McNichols said. “This is not the way we had hoped his
career at Indiana State would end. He has meant so much to this
school and this team.”
In other results for the Lady Sycamores, Jeanne
Bridges was fifth in the long jump, Satia Spight seventh in the high
jump, Dani Prince 10th in the 5000 meters and Laura Engle
27th in the mile. For the men’s team Adam Lies was third
in the 200 meters (22.77) and Justin Kunz seventh in the 5000
meters.
The NCAA will release the full list of
competitors for next weeks’ NCAA Indoor Championships at
Fayetteville, Ark., at 7 p.m. (EST) Monday. |
