SYCAMORES DROP SEASON OPENER TO CENTRAL MICHIGAN
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
The Indiana State volleyball team
(0-1) dropped its season opening match at Central Michigan (1-0) in
the opener for both clubs of the 2006 Super 8 Chippewa Classic. The
Sycamores fell by a score of 3-0, dropping the games by a count of
30-23, 30-16, 30-26.
In the first game, ISU’s Stephanie
Meier recorded a service ace to get within 5-4 on the scoreboard,
but that was as close as it would get as CMU rattled off the game’s
next four points for a 9-4 lead that they would not relinquish. A
block by Kelli Whitaker and Stephanie Volden made the score 29-23,
before CMU was able to post the final point for the 30-23 victory.
Whitaker knotted the second game
at 9, before the Chippewa’s scored four in a row for the 13-9
advantage. The game was tied again at 14 on a pair of block assists
by Volden and Kristen Kerscher. After a kill by Kerscher got ISU
back with one at 16-15, CMU scored the game’s next nine points and
14 of the last 15 for the 30-16 win.
After trailing by as many as seven
points (21-14) in the match’s third game, ISU rallied to get the
score back to 25-23 on a block by Volden, but that was as close as
ISU could get before a kill by CMU’s Kate Fissell ended the game and
match with a score of 30-26.
Kerscher and Volden each posted a
team high nine kills, while Kerscher posted a match-best .412
hitting percentage. Whitney Nichols had 25 set assists while Meier
posted one service ace. Kristy Cox led the Sycamores with 13 digs
Kerscher, Volden and Stephanie Roof each posted four total blocks
each. ISU recorded its best team hitting percentage of .212 in the
match’s third game.
The Sycamores get right back into
action with a pair of contests on Saturday afternoon. ISU faces off
against Idaho State at 10:00 a.m. before finishing tournament play
versus Wisconsin-Green Bay at 5:00 p.m.
