SYCAMORES GO 1-1 ON DAY ONE OF THE DUSQUESNE INVITATIONAL

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—The Sycamores were in action Friday at 3pm (ET) for a double header at the Duquesne Invitational. In the first match they faced The Red Flash of Saint Francis and came away with their first victory of the year behind solid efforts from freshman Kelli Whitaker (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palastine H.S.) and senior Stephanie Roof (Bloomington, Ill. / Normal Community H.S.). Kelli paced the offense with 19 kills for the match while Stephanie contributed a 13 attack effort. On the defensive side Sophomore Kristy Cox (Muncie, Ind. / Delta H.S.) once again provided steady play from her libero position with 16 digs.

The Sycamores took game one of the match 30-26 before falling 30-21 in the second. They bounced back in the third game with a 30-27 edge before St. Francis snagged game four by a count of 30-24. This sent the match to a decisive fifth game which would see five ties before the Sycamores pulled ahead for a 16-14 advantage.

Their second game of the day was against the tournament host The Duquesne Dukes and it started at 7pm (ET).

Coming off their strong showing earlier in the day the Sycamores came up against a brick wall as they faced the Duquesne Dukes. The Sycamores relied on the steady play of Kelli Whitaker (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palastine H.S.) who led the team with seven kills and sophomore libero Kristy Cox (Muncie, Ind. / Delta H.S.) who posted 12 digs.

The Dukes, however, proved to be too much to overcome as The Sycamores fell 3-0 in their second game of the day. Duquesne won the first game 30-16 followed by a 30-21 performance in the second game. In the decisive third game The Dukes strode to a 30-8 win.

The Sycamores are in action once again tomorrow against Robert Morris at 11am and against Delaware State at 3:30.
