SYCAMORES VICTORIOUS ON DAY 1 OF OAKLAND INVITATIONAL

Rochester, Mich. - - - The Sycamores claimed their third victory of the year Friday (9/8) with an impressive 3-1 match victory over The Grizzlies of Oakland University. The Sycamores are now (3-6) while the Grizzlies fall to (0-5).

The Sycamores once again relied on their offensive/defensive combination of freshman Kelli Whitaker (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palastine) and sophomore Kristy Cox (Muncie, Ind. / Delta). Kelli led the offense with a total of 14 kills and a .278 attack percentage while Kristy keyed the defense as she went for an amazing 37 digs. The Grizzles were lead by Leah Dupuie and Monica Frechen who combined for 25 kills but the real story was the errors made. The Grizzles went for a total of 34 errors, 6 more then the Sycamores, which proved to be a key catalyst to the Sycamore victory.

The Sycamore win was a close one, much closer then the 3-1 score would indicate. The Oakland Grizzles came out to win the first match of the day with a 30-24 victory but from then on the Sycamores took control and never looked back. They took the following match 30-26 and clawed their way to a 33-31 victory in the third match. After that it was smooth sailing as the Sycamores cruised to a 30-22 decision in the fourth and final match to secure the overall victory.

Don’t forget that the Sycamores are in action once again tomorrow for day two of the Oakland University Invitational as they face Bowling Green at 2:30 PM followed by Cleveland State at 5.
