SYCAMORES TAKE
CONVINCING 106-54 EXHIBITION VICTORY
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana
State showed a renewed inside presence scoring 62 points in the
paint and grabbing 44 rebounds as the Sycamores easily defeated
St. Joseph’s (Ind.) 106-54 in exhibition action at Hulman Center.
Freshman center
Laura Rudolphi put on quite a show in her ISU debut, scoring a
game-high 25 points and pulling down nine rebounds. She hit
8-of-14 from the field and was 9-of-10 on free throws. Also
topping the 20 point mark was sophomore Stephanie Lisch who poured
in 20 points while senior Nikki Hall was in double figures with
14; junior Melanie Boeglin also scored 14; and junior Kristen
Weddle had 10.
Indiana State
raced out to a 13-2 lead just four minutes into the contest,
pressing the entire floor and hitting layup-after-layup on the
offensive end. After St. Joe’s inched closer to the Sycamores at
26-15 with 10:20 left in the first half, the ISU defense clamped
down , going on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to take a
39-15 lead, putting any hopes off a Puma victory away. ISU would
lead 52-29 at the half.
After St. Joe’s
Allison Hughes hit a triple with 7:36 left in the game to make the
score 83-47, the Sycamore defense was challenged and responded –
allowing just five points the rest of the game. Rudolphi brought
the crowd of 2,220 to its feet with 2:08 left in the game as she
put ISU over the century mark with 101 points.
In a game in
which the Sycamores showed its offensive power, Indiana State hit
only two three-point field goals, but rather was a force inside;
grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and scoring 26 second chance
points. The Indiana State depth showed itself as the Sycamore
bench scored 47 points on the evening.
“I think we did a
lot of positive things tonight,” head coach Jim Wiedie said. “Our
press was not where it needs to be, but we got better as the game
went along. Our kids were very active and they played real hard.
We got contributions from everybody. Tonight’s game was a pretty
good way to kick off the year.”
ISU gets another
tune up in less than a week when they host Lewis University on
November 10. Tipoff at Hulman Center is set for 7:00 p.m. The
Sycamores open the regular season at Miami (Ohio) on November 19.
