ISU DEFENSE STIFFLES SHOCKERS, 80-52

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – After being on the road for more than a month, thirty-six days to be exact, the Indiana State women's basketball team returned to the friendly confines of the Hulman Center Friday (Jan. 14) night to notch their first MVC win of the 2004-05 season over the visiting Wichita State Shockers, 80-52. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Sycamores and pushes their record to 8-5 (1-3 MVC). Wichita State drops to 4-10 (1-4 MVC).

Lisa Verhoff and Anne Thatcher paced ISU with 18 points apiece. Verhoff finished the game shooting 6-of-9 from the field, including trio of 3-pointers and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Thatcher came off the bench to tie her career-high, knocking down 6-of-13 shots, including four 3-pointers of her own. Kristin Weddle added 12 points and six rebounds and Ashley Clark pitched in nine points and five rebounds.

Aubrey Cameron came off the bench and scored 16 points to lead the Shockers. Cameron made 5-of-10 shots from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw lane. Nichole Switzer added 11 points and seven rebounds for Wichita State. Antionette Wells pitched in seven points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort for the Shockers.

ISU's defense was the key to the game, as they caused a season-high 32 Wichita State turnovers which turned into 41 Sycamore points. ISU held an advantage in points in the paint, 20-16. The Sycamore bench out-scored the Shockers' 38-23.

The Sycamores knocked down 10 3-pointers, tying a season-high.

ISU returns to the court on Sunday (Jan. 16) when they host SMS. Tip-off at the Hulman Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST), a change from previous schedules. Sunday's contest will be televised live by Fox Sports Midwest with Mitch Holdhus and Jill Hutchison on the call.
