TERRE HAUTE,
Ind. – Jenni Lingor's three-point shot from the top of
the arc with 3.7 seconds left to play gave the SMS Bears an 80-77
victory over Indiana State on Sunday (Jan. 16) in front of 3,213
at the Hulman Center. The loss drops the Sycamores to 8-6 (1-4 MVC)
on the season, while SMS moves to 10-5 (5-1 MVC).
ISU trailed by two (75-73) with 2:44 to play, before
Melanie Boeglin drove through the lane and drew a foul and a trip
to the free throw line. Boeglin knocked down both shots to tie the
game for the sixth time in the second half. The Bears brought the
ball up the court and went up by two (77-75) when Lingor hit a jumper.
The Sycamores once again put the ball in Boeglin's hands and she
answered by hitting two more free throws to tie the game at 77-77.
SMS missed a shot with 20 seconds to go, but gathered the offense
rebound and called time-out to set up what turned out to be the
game-winner.
The Sycamores turned in a well-rounded effort offensively
as four players scored in double figures. Ashley Clark was the leading
scorer for ISU with 15 points and five rebounds. Rachel Maenpaa
dropped in 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Boeglin contributed 13
and Stephanie Lisch added 11 in the loss for ISU.
For SMS, Kari Koch led the way with 22 points.
The guard finished the game shooting 8-of-17 from the floor, including
6-of-10 from behind the three point line. Lingor added 19 points,
all of which came in the second half. Nichole Lehman and K.C. Cowgill
each pitched in 16 points for the Bears.
The Bears' 19 three-pointers set a new Missouri
Valley Conference and school record. Conversely, ISU was 7-of-15
from three-point land.
The Sycamores out-rebounded SMS 35-30, and also
scored 14 more points in the paint, 32-18.
Indiana State will take to the road for their next
two games. The Sycamores will first travel to Northern Iowa on Friday
(Jan. 21) for an 8:00 p.m. game. The Sycamores then travel to Peoria,
Ill., to face off against the Bradley Braves at 3:05 p.m.
