TERRE HAUTE,
Ind. – After shooting just 31.3 percent (10-of-32) in
the first half and trailing by three at halftime, the Indiana State
women's basketball team made 15-of-29 (.517) shots in the second
stanza to defeat Creighton 79-76 at the Hulman Center Friday (Feb.
4) night. The Sycamores (13-6, 6-4 MVC) finished the game shooting
41 percent, while the BlueJays (14-5, 8-2 MVC) shot 41.9 percent
(31-of-74). The win is the fifth straight for the Sycamores, tying
a season-high.
Coming off her third MVC Newcomer of the Week honor,
Ashley Clark notched her fourth double-double of the season to pace
ISU. The Cincinnati, Ohio native ended the game with 20 points and
10 rebounds. Melanie Boeglin rebounded from a slow first half to
score all 13 of her points in the second 20 minutes of play. Nikki
Hall came off the bench to set a new career-high by pitching in
13 points and five rebounds.
Angie Janis led Creighton with 23 points. Janis
made 9-of-14 shots and was perfect from the free throw line (4-of-4).
Laura Spanheimer chipped in 14 points and Codi Walker came off the
bench to add 12 points and five rebounds for the BlueJays.
The teams were dead even on scoring on points in
the paint, with each scoring 32. Creighton held a 7-4 advantage
in fast break points, while the Sycamores held a slight advantage
in points off of turnovers (24-22).
Today's game marked the first time since the Sycamores'
76-62 win at Cincinnati on Nov. 28, 2004 in which ISU trailed at
the half and came from behind to steal a victory. Indiana State
also broke the 70 point plateau for the 12th consecutive game, compiling
a record of 8-4 along the way.
The Sycamores close out their four-game homestand
when Drake comes to the Hulman Center on Sunday (Feb. 6). Tip-off
is scheduled for 3 p.m., a change from previous schedules.
