ISU EARNS KEY WIN
OVER NORTHERN IOWA, 75-56
TERRE HAUTE, Ind.
– The Indiana State Sycamores got off to a slow start against
Northern Iowa on Saturday at the Hulman Center, but a 25-2 ISU
run quickly put the Sycamores on top for good as they won a critical
MVC matchup 75-56 over the Panthers.
UNI jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after hitting its first three
shots, but Melanie Boeglin sparked the Sycamore run with seven
points in a two-minute span to spark the offense, which was dormant
for the first four minutes of the game.
Boeglin finished with a game-high 26 points while Stephanie Lisch
recorded a season-best 16 points to lead the Sycamore offensive
attack that hit 51 percent from the field. The Sycamores held
UNI to 34 percent shooting and 28 percent from behind the arc.
After a Panther three-pointer by Jessie Biggs increased the UNI
lead to 10-2 at the 13:55 mark, Boeglin started the 25-2 run that
spanned 8:15. During that time, ISU hit 9-of-13 shots from the
field and made 6-of-8 from the line. The Sycamores concluded the
run with a layup by Rachel Maenpaa, the sixth player to score
in the run, at the 4:43 mark which gave ISU a 27-12 lead.
The teams traded baskets for the rest of the half as ISU went
into the halftime break with a 33-23 advantage.
The second half began with ISU jumping out to a 41-26 lead at
the 16:52 mark, but UNI would not go away. The Panthers made three-point
field goals on three consecutive possessions to get cut the lead
to 48-40 with 13:38 remaining, the closest they would get in the
final period.
The 75 points for Indiana State marks the 17th consecutive game
in which the Trees scored at least 70 points. The Sycamores also
shot over 50 percent for the third straight game as they connected
on 26-of-51 shots from the field (51 percent). ISU attempted a
season-low two field goals from behind the three-point arc, while
Northern Iowa finished the game 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) from three-point
land.
The victory moves ISU to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the MVC, while
UNI falls to 16-9 on the season and 10-4 in conference action.
The Sycamores are now a half-game behind third-place UNI in the
MVC regular-season standings and two-games behind second-place
Creighton, who plays SMS on Sunday.
Indiana State will play at Evansville and Southern Illinois next
week on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, before closing out
the regular season with a matchup against Illinois State at the
Hulman Center on Saturday, March 5.
