Event Details

This presentation will focus on the evidence based research in the evaluation and treatment of Cervical Spine Injuries. The speaker and her experience and research lends to a presentation that closely aligns with the university’s collaboration and interdisciplinary focus of health care providers. This demonstrates ISU’s and the profession of Athletic Training’s progressive view of experiential learning.

Students, staff and faculty from the athletic training department, nursing department, medical school, area emergency medical technicians, area emergency room doctors and nurses, rural health care practitioners, and many others are invited to attend. Light fair will be provided. We encourage this team approach to medical care in cervical spine injuries and hope this provides an opportunity to network with area health care providers.

Dr. MaryBeth Horodyski is currently the Research Director in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Florida. Dr. Horodyski began to investigate the log-roll technique, widely used to move spine-injured patients to a spine board.  That research has resulted in three funded grant proposals, 29 abstracts/presentations at national and international conferences and 14 papers published in respected, peer-reviewed journals. Because of the findings of her research group, recommendations on how to move an injured athlete have changed.  Her work has contributed to the most recent NATA Position Statement on the acute management of the cervical spine-injured athlete recommends use of the lift-and-slide technique to transfer an injured person to a spine board instead of the traditional log roll.
