Distance Education REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTSThis information supersedes the information that you received from any other office at Indiana State University about registration. The Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice handles registration differently from the standard method described by the Office of Registration and Records or the School of Graduate Studies. During Fall and Spring semesters, the Distance Education Coordinator will send you an e-mail indicating that it is time to register for classes. Please note that registration for Summer session classes is handled during the spring registration process. So, during the Spring semester you will register for summer and fall classes. During the Fall semester you will register for spring classes. All summer distance education courses last 10 weeks, and begin in June. This department does not offer its distance education courses as Summer I or Summer II. All Criminology & Criminal Justice distance education classes during the summer are simply Summer (no I or II). After receiving the notice from the Distance Education Coordinator you will then go to the link provided in the e-mail for registration information. Undergraduate and graduate students have separate information to follow. Once you submit your information, it will be processed by the Distance Education Coordinator and you will receive an e-mail listing your classes. By submitting the web form, you are stating that you want to be registered for courses. If after receiving the e-mail listing your courses, you cannot take the assigned courses, please let the staff member know and alternatives will be explored. You will not be registered in any course without your permission. IMPORTANT: All registration communications with students from the university and its staff must be done through the ISU Outlook e-mail system. You must use your ISU Outlook e-mail account to communicate with the Distance Education Coordinator. Failure to do so will result in delayed or no registration of the student. The use of outside (AOL, MSN, ect.) e-mail accounts to communicate about student registration does not meet privacy/security requirements, and thus will be phased out starting with the Fall 2007 registration period. The Distance Education Coordinator registers you in your Criminology & Criminal Justice (CRIM) classes. At times, students may not be allowed to choose their CRIM classes. The classes that are chosen for the student are based on three key principles: what the student needs to graduate, what courses are available, and the current class size (loading) of the classes. Please be assured that this tightly controlled registration system will not prevent you from taking any required courses or completing the program in a timely manner. Quite the contrary – this system is necessary to assure your timely progress. It is only the timing of when you take courses that is controlled by the department. While you are quite welcome to contact your advisor before registering, you are not required to do so. Contact your advisor if you need assistance in selecting an area of concentration or electives best suited to your needs and interests. You advisor will also be happy to discuss any other academic or career issues with you, but he/she cannot assist you with the registration process. It is important that students realize the Distance Education Coordinator is NOT the student's official academic advisor. While this person can answer general questions about courses, specific and more directed questions should go to the student's official advisor. Likewise, petitions and other formal requests from the student to university must be done by (and can only be done) by the official academic advisor. The Distance Education Coordinator is available to assist the student and the advisor in the completion of tasks like this. A student can find the name of their advisor on the DARS report. Undergraduate students are required to register themselves for general education courses. You should feel free to communicate about which general education courses you should take, but it is ultimately up to the undergraduate student to register them self via the web for the general education courses. Log in to the ISU portal for information about web-based registration. Some departments allow you to register via the web, while others have registration procedures similar to ours. Contact the department in which you wish to take the course if you have problems or questions regarding registering. THE DISTANCE EDUCATION COORDINATOR CANNOT REGISTER STUDENTS FOR ANY CLASSES BUT CRIMINOLOGY & CRIMINAL JUSTICE CLASSES. Graduate students may select elective courses from among all of those available via distance education throughout ISU's other graduate programs. Remember, there is a six credit hour limit on electives taken outside the department. Log in to the ISU portal for information about web-based registration.
