On-line Course Development Policies
These policies or guidelines are provided to ensure the university
community is aware of issues that affect the development of an online
course. They are based, in part, on the broad support that faculty
members expect and that we are able to provide.
- The CIRT requires at least one full semester of preparation to assist
faculty in developing a fully on-line course or a course that has a
strong web component. Appropriate course development is a time and labor
intensive process for both faculty and instructional designers.
- Faculty who have never delivered a course on-line are strongly
recommended to enroll in the Teaching in an On-line Environment Series
at least one full semester before course delivery. This series is
designed to help faculty gain competence in understanding on-line
pedagogy and the ISU learning management system, Blackboard.
- Ongoing preparation of a course during first-time delivery is not
recommended. The amount of time and effort needed to work one-to-one
with a faculty member affects our ability to work simultaneously with
dozens of other faculty.
- Initial consultations are necessary early in the course development
process for on-line courses associated with an international audience.
The special circumstances that surround course development for this
audiences require a number of decisions that affect both the quality and
delivery of the course.
We realize there are circumstances that require some deviation from
these policies. However, these should be the exception rather than the
rule. We are committed to providing the best level of service to all
faculty members. Please contact Les Lunce, Associate Director, CIRT
at les.lunce@indstate.edu should you desire further information.
