Birthplace of Paul Dresser - American Composer

Paul Dresser has been a source of pride to his native Terre Haute for over one hundred years. He played a very important role in the history of American music in the Gay Nineties. He is best known for composing our state song, "On the Banks of the Wabash".

Paul was born in Terre Haute on April 22, 1859, just before the beginning of the Civil War, to John and Sarah Dreiser, in the home which the Vigo County Historical Society now owns and maintains in his honor on Dresser Drive in Fairbanks Park. In 1967, the Indiana General Assembly designated the home a State Shrine and Memorial, and the National Music Council listed it as "A Landmark of American Music". The home is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Vigo County Historical Society owns and maintains the birthplace of Paul Dresser located at Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Wabash Valley Visions & Voices: A Digital Memory Project for West Central Indiana is dedicated to the documentation and the preservation of the region's history and heritage in print, pictures and sound. As a collaborative effort involving the Wabash's libraries, museums, cultural organizations and community groups, the project provides free access to its digital collection via the internet and promotes remembrance and lifelong learning for all Hoosiers.

As a regional project, Wabash Visions & Voices focuses on a five county area in west central Indiana-Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo Counties. The digital collection contains artifacts, administrative and personal papers, manuscripts, photographs, texts, yearbooks, maps, oral histories, and other audio / video files.

Society staff and volunteers host the Peker Cabin in Fowler Park during Pioneer Days and other Vigo County Parks Department functions. The Peker Cabin was originally located in Sugar Creek Township on Certain Road, about one mile from the Wabash River and two miles south of West Terre Haute. The cabin was built in, or about, 1834.  In 1974, the cabin was donated by the Peker family and was dismantled and reconstructed in the village by Vigo County Park Staff. Come join us to catch a glimpse of pioneer life in Vigo County.
