Career and Technical Education
Bachelor Degree-Completion Program

The Career and Technical Education Program prepares career and technical teachers for:

Secondary schools (high schools)
Post-secondary schools, such as career centers, technical institutes, correctional facilities, and community colleges

The program also prepares you to be an administrator at the post-secondary school level.

The program provides you with knowledge and skills in planning instruction, managing learning environments, assessing student performance, and appropriate instructional strategies to students who have, or will have, extensive work experience in a technical or trade area.

Career and technical education majors must have prior work experience or related technical college course work in the field in which they wish to teach. Technical credits (24 credit hours) may be awarded based on relevant trade certificates and/or related technical college credit transferred from other degree programs. You are advised to contact an advisor to check on the documentation needed to verify your technical credit.

Listed below are courses in the Career and Technical Education Program. The specific courses and credit required vary, depending on course work transferred.

TMGT 385	Methods and Strategies for Instructional Programs (3 credits)
TMGT 490	Topics in Technology Management (3 credits)
TECHNICAL CORE (24 credit hours)
Students complete an approved technical core or specialization in a technical area as listed under Occupational Specialist License Titles, Indiana Department of Education. Students may also complete technical electives approved by the advisor, in the same technical area, if needed to equal 24 credit hours. Approved technical transfer courses can also be applied to this area.
TEACHING OPTION (34 credit hours)
Select one of the following options. Option A is only offered on the ISU campus. Option B can be completed entirely via distance learning or on the ISU campus. *Option A: Secondary School (34 credit hours):* This option is for students who wish to teach in public schools. TCED 490 Instructional Methods and Education Trends (3 credits) Courses in the senior high-junior high/middle school professional education sequence to satisfy College of Education teaching requirements. For details, visit the department's Web site. Two years (4,000 clock hours) of successful employment in a recognized technical field or 1,500 hours of supervised work in an approved teacher education program or an equivalent combination. *Option B: Post-Secondary School (34 credit hours):* This option is for students who wish to teach in community or technical colleges or institutions. GENERAL EDUCATION (47 credit hours)

Course Delivery

You have the option of completing this program on the Indiana State University campus - or via distance learning.

Distance Learning Option:

Career and Technical Education Major (postsecondary teaching option): All courses are offered via the Internet. On-campus visits are not required.
Career and Technical Education Major (secondary school option): Selected courses are offered via the Internet. The remainder are offered on the ISU campus. On-campus visits are required. For details, see course descriptions.

General Education requirements can be fulfilled by a combination of course work earned through the University's Distance Learning Program, the Indiana College Network, and your local college and university.

Graduates are qualified for professional careers in business, industry, and educational institutions. Depending on the teaching option selected, graduates are hired as:

High school career and technical education teachers

Admission / Credit Transfer

The Career and Technical Education Program is open to eligible in-state, out-of-state, and international applicants. The program is designed for transfer students. For details on credit transfer and admission requirements, see chart (below).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS / CREDIT TRANSFER
Career and Technical Education

Admission -- Minimum Requirements

To be admitted to the distance learning program in career and technical education, you must satisfy the following:

Admission to the University as a degree-seeking student

A 2.0 cumulative grade point average in all college level studies

It is helpful if you have completed courses in basic and liberal studies, including: English (writing); public speaking; mathematics (intermediate algebra or above); basic laboratory sciences (biology, life sciences), and physical education.
General Guidelines for Credit Transfer

The following are general guidelines. Upon admission, academic advisors review transcripts to determine which credit transfers and which courses will be included in your program of study.

Credit earned from regionally accredited colleges or universities is transferable.

Transfer credit is assigned only for courses in which you have earned a grade of C or higher.

Generally, an equivalent number of credit hours are given.

In some cases, credit may be transferable to the University, but may not be applied toward completion of the Career and Technical Education Program.

Remedial, audited, or non-credit classes do not transfer.

College Living, orientation, and study skills classes do not transfer.

Up to 94 credit hours of total transfer credit will be accepted for transfer into a bachelor degree program; at least 30 credit hours must be completed through ISU to earn the bachelor degree.
