Bachelor Degree-Completion Program
Indiana State University offers you an unique opportunity to earn a bachelor of science in insurance and risk management. ISU is one of only 36 universities in North America to offer a bachelor of science degree in insurance and risk management, and only one of four such universities to offer 11 or more undergraduate courses in insurance or risk management.
The faculty includes three full-time professors, each who hold a doctorate and professional designations or industry experience. The Insurance and Risk Management Program has been developed in conjunction with the Insurance Advisory Council composed of industry leaders. Since 1988, the industry has invested in excess of $1,800,000 in ISU’s program, including professional development for students and faculty, faculty research, and program development and operation.
In 1998, Donald F. and Patricia Gongaware endowed The Gongaware Center for Insurance Management Development, which adds exciting possibilities for scholarships, internships, and networking with industry leaders. This leadership and guidance from industry ensures a real-world education that prepares you for careers in the financial services industry.
The Insurance and Risk Management Program offers you a foundation of liberal studies and a core of business courses, combined with a concentration of nine courses in insurance and risk management. Included are four CLU courses, two CPCU courses, and one ARM course.
Accounting Minor (optional): It is possible to earn a minor in accounting within this degree by completing an additional 12 credits of approved accounting courses. For details, see Accounting Minor.

The bachelor degree-completion program in insurance and risk management typically includes 62-70 credit hours. The specific courses and credit required may vary, depending on course work transferred.

You have the option of completing the Insurance and Risk Management Program on the Indiana State University campus - or via distance learning.
Distance Learning Option:
- All required courses in the insurance and risk management major are offered via the Internet.
- All courses in the optional accounting minor are offered via the Internet.
- General education requirements can be fulfilled by a combination of course work earned through the University's Distance Learning Program, the Indiana College Network, and your local college or university.
- On-campus visits are NOT required.
Indiana State University has an outstanding placement record of its insurance and risk management majors in the industry. Opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers in insurance and risk management are exceptional. Few industries can match the diversity of career opportunities that are available to ISU insurance and risk management graduates.
About 25 percent of insurance industry positions are sales/marketing related. The other 75 percent of the career opportunities available are in professional, managerial, and technical fields including: actuarial, claims, loss control, risk management, safety management, and underwriting. In Indiana alone, 33,000 professionals work in the industry in non-sales positions.
Indiana is home to over 160 insurance companies.
The Insurance and Risk Management Program is open to eligible in-state (Indiana) and out-of-state applicants. The program is designed for transfer students. Specific freshman and sophomore courses (listed below) must have been completed.
Insurance and Risk Management
To be admitted to the distance learning program in insurance and risk management, you must be admitted to the University as a degree-seeking student and satisfy the following:
- An associate of science (A.S.) in business administration from Ivy Tech Community College, Vincennes University, or another regionally accredited college or university, with a grade point average of 2.25 or higher;
Or a minimum of 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university with a grade point average of 2.25 or higher.
- Courses in: English (freshman composition); Communications (speaking); Mathematics (intermediate algebra, college algebra, or calculus); a legal environment of business course
- Eighteen (18) credit hours of specified prebusiness cornerstone and foundation courses with a grade point average of 2.25 or higher, including:
- Information Technology Literacy (3 credits)
- Principles of Macroeconomics (3 credits)
- Principles of Microeconomics (3 credits)
- Principles of Accounting I (3 credits)
- Principles of Accounting II (3 credits)
- Business Statistics I (3 credits)
The following are general guidelines. Upon admission, academic advisors review transcripts to determine which credit transfers and which courses will be included in your program of study.
- Credit earned from regionally accredited colleges or universities is transferable.
- Technical skills courses in an A.A.S. program may not transfer; however, any credit earned in general education, liberal arts, or liberal studies may be transferable.
- Transfer credit is assigned only for courses in which you have earned a grade of C or higher.
- The Insurance and Risk Management Program cannot accept Ivy Tech credit earned prior to 1993.
- Generally, an equivalent number of credit hours are given.
- In some cases, credit may be transferable to the University, but may not be applied toward completion of the Insurance and Risk Management Program.
- Remedial, audited, or non-credit classes do not transfer.
- College Living, orientation, and study skills classes do not transfer.
- Up to 94 credit hours of total transfer credit will be accepted for transfer into a bachelor degree program; at least 30 credit hours must be completed through ISU to earn the bachelor degree.
