KEEPING ACCURATE RECORDS IN YOUR ONLINE COURSE
- by CLEO MAGNUSON, ISU Instructional Designer

Do you use the assignment feature and the electronic gradebook in the Blackboard course management system?

If you use these features, not only can you post the assignment but students can also submit their assignments through the use of this tool. Completed assignments can be retrieved by the instructor from the gradebook. Since the assignment feature feeds into the gradebook, you can make comments about the student's work (which can be returned to the student) and record the student's grade.

If you choose to make the grades visible to students, they can access their grades through My Grades (from the Tools button) within a matter of minutes after the assignments have been graded. In addition, the student can view the returned document with your comments.

As the instructor, you can add headings in the gradebook that may be specific to your discipline or even such headings as "Extra Credit" or "Group Project 1." Once you have added a heading, an "edit" link will appear, providing the instructor with the opportunity to hand enter each student's grade in that column.

One of the most important components of online record-keeping is keeping a back-up of the electronic gradebook. Be sure to download your gradebook frequently and export (back up) your course. (Downloading your gradebook and exporting your course are separate functions in Blackboard.) When you download your gradebook from Blackboard, it will export as a .csv file but it can be opened in MS Excel. You can also add entries, modify entries and then upload the grade book once you have made changes. You can also print a copy of the MS Excel gradebook. Be sure to upload the gradebook as a .csv file.
