By KATHY A. BARNEY

Stress is a mind / body / spirit phenomenon. To manage the stress in your life, you need a multifaceted approach in coping mechanisms.

The following are simple techniques that can be used to bring immediate benefits to these three dimensions:

  1. Take three deep, long, slow breaths many times throughout the day.

  2. Focus on the positive things in your life. Make a list of the things that make you happy.

  3. Restore some quiet time to your life, a little bit every day.

  4. Make an effort to consciously alter negative and anxious thought patterns with positive thoughts.

  5. Sneak in exercise whenever possible. Take the stairs. Park further away from the door on purpose. Pick up the pace of movement.

  6. Eat nutritiously most of the time. Keep healthy snacks and water handy.

  7. Learn to value sleep.

  8. Make daily positive connections with others.

Make simple changes for yourself and then teach them to others - thus minimizing stress cycles around you.

Stress management does not have to be a complex project when many simple things can be done daily to positively affect of your stressful life.
