Permanent Art Collection

20th Century African Art

The work in this collection consists of traditional African Art generated by the Youruba peoples.  Masks, prayer and fetish figures used in the ceremonies and rituals of the various groups make up the bulk of the collection.

The collection of textiles and wraps known as “aso oke” are native to the country of Nigeria.  Generated by the people of the Youruba, the pieces in this collection represent the highest class in textile wear.  The pieces were acquired through an exhibit organized in the year 2000, by Professor Dele Jegede, entitled “Women to Women, Weaving Cultures, and Shaping History”.
