Adolf Gottlieb (1903 - 1974)

A student of Social Realism under John Sloan and Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York, followed by his enrollment at the Academic de la Grand in Paris.

A major exponent of Abstract Expressionism.  Gottlieb’s symbolism is a reflection on duality between the contradiction of opposites, between humanity and the universe, male and female, creation and destruction.  Early in his career, he received commissions from the Federal Arts Project to paint murals.
