Diego Rivera
(1886 – 1957)
Lived in
Mexico. Considered by most as the greatest Mexican painter of the 20th
century. He traveled through Europe and absorbing the influences of
Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse, while studying the fresco techniques
of Giotto. Rivera returned to Mexico to redefine and recast the
images of the Mexican people.
Using Aztec
and Mayan symbols, his content combined the Pre-Columbian past with
themes of the Mexican Revolution and the customs and daily lives of
the people in his murals.
