Josef Albers
(1888-1974)
Joseph Albers
was a member of the Bauhaus in Germany from 1920 until 1933. First,
a student, then as a teacher. Albers’ tenure at the school was
longer than any other artist of this pioneering school of art. In
1933 he came to the United States, where he taught at Black Mountain
College for sixteen years.
In 1950 he was
appointed chair of the department of design at the Yale University
School of Art. His contribution to color theory through his
research is principle to most pedagogy. Albers was the first
living artist to have a major solo retrospective at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
