Joseph Stella
(1877-1946)
Studied under
William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in New York.
Stella’s work crosses over many genres and movements including
Modernism, Futurism, and Social Realism. His association with Avant
Garde artists Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp catapulted him from
illustrator to an American Modernist.
His subject
matter is primarily New York bridges and industrial areas, seen from
atypical points of view. Our painting, “Smoke Stacks” was featured
in a retrospective of Stella’s work at the Whitney Museum of Art in
New York City in 1994.
