Willem de Kooning (1904 - 1997)
Born in
Rotterdam, Holland and student at the Academic van Beeldende Kunsten
en Tecanische Wetenschappen, while he apprenticed as a commercial
artist. Coming to America in 1926, he met Stuart Davis, John Graham
and Arshille Gorky, with who shared a studio.
With Cubism
serving as a primary influence, De Kooning series on the subject of
women catapulted him into notoriety. Participating in many group
shows with other New York artists, the movement of Abstract
Expressionism was conceived.
