How do I file a Curriculum Petition?

Each College follows a different process; in some Colleges the student initiates the curriculum petition; in others the academic adviser does.

When requesting that a course, which is not designated as a General Education course, meets a General Education requirement, please explicitly state how the course’s content does this. The General Education requirement is generally answered in a course syllabus.

When adviser error is the reason for why the student did not meet a General Education requirement, please say so.

Please do not include statements about the student’s personal life (e.g. “has a family,” “works full-time,” “has moved out of the state of Indiana”) in the petition.

The Academic Deans of each College make the final determination on all curriculum petitions.

What is the Information and Technology Literacy Exemption Test?

The Information and Technology Literacy Exemption Test allows students to test out of ITL courses.
- Information technology literacy is expected to be demonstrated by all students within the first 32 hours of course work at ISU by obtaining a passing score on the Information Technology Literacy Exemption Test (offered by the University Testing Office, 237-7666), completing a major for which the requirement is met through course work required for the major program, or successfully completing one of the following approved information technology literacy courses:

CIMT 272		Introduction to Classroom Computer Use
CS 151, CS 170, and CS 256		Will satisfy the Information Technology Literacy requirement for Information Technology majors
CS 101		Information Technology Literacy

HLTH 112		Computing Literacy in Health, Environmental, and Safety Sciences

Please note, students may take either test anytime while at ISU. Practice tests are available for in some cases. Please visit the testing website for more information. Students take these tests from the University Testing facility located in Erickson Hall. Students will need their University ID, no passwords are necessary.

Can I take courses in my native language to satisfy the foreign language requirement?

Students wishing to take a language course in their native language or in a language in which they have achieved fluency must petition the LLL Department to receive course credit.
- In most cases students may not fulfill their foreign language requirement by taking courses in their native language.

Credit will be granted only if it is determined by the LLL Department that the course covers materials or develops skills that the student has not yet mastered.

No mastery credit will be awarded to students for courses in their native language (credit for 101, 102, 201 or 202) upon completion of a higher level course.

Does everyone need to take Physical Education?

Physical Education 101 and 101L are required of all students. Majors in elementary education take Physical Education 348, while majors in kindergarten-
primary education and early childhood education take Physical Education 463 to satisfy this requirement.
Completion of “boot camp” as an active enlistee or a reservist meets this requirement
The department modifies the lab portion of the class for students with disabilities.
Students with disabilities may take the course online.
If a student has medical documentation that they cannot take the lab portion of the class, the lab will be waived, but the student still will be required to enroll in the lecture portion of the class.

How do I know which Quantitative Literacy course to take?

Is a Science lab really required?

Students must enroll in both the lecture and the lab to receive full credit for the course. Failure to complete a science lab will result in repeating the course.

Which English course should I take?

The Basic Studies component of the General Education program is intended to strengthen your abilities in spoken and written communication skills, quantitative literacy, and foreign language and to enhance your physical fitness. Because of the speaking and writing requirements in your Liberal Studies classes, it is important that you complete English 101 and 105, or English 107 or 130, or English 108 and Communication 101 by the end of your freshman year. The Basic Studies requirements are:

English Placement: is determined by SAT scores or previous completion of a college English course.

English 101 and 105 or, if SAT Verbal score is at least 510 or ACT Verbal score is at least 20, English 107 or 130.
English majors, minors and honors students take English 108 unless exempted by a placement test, international students whose native language is not English take ESL 103A and/or ESL 103B before taking English 105.
After completing 48 hours, take English 305, 305T, or ASBE/BEIT 336, or English 405 after completing 62 hours.

Can I take General Education courses abroad?

Liberal Studies Credit through Study Abroad. Study Abroad students should meet with the Coordinator for Academic Programs Abroad before their departure to discuss Part I of the Guide for Students, attend a pre-departure orientation, complete the Guide to Students within one month of their return to ISU, and approved by the Coordinator of Academic Programs Abroad based upon the completed Guide to satisfy the Liberal Studies Multicultural Studies: International Cultures [MCS:IC] requirement of the General Education 2000 Program. Although, the study abroad experience and completed Guide for Students will substitute for the MCS:IC requirement, no college credit will be awarded for these activities.
Several Liberal Studies courses are offered through the Study Abroad Program. These courses are available only to students studying abroad and are not taught on the ISU campus.
Students studying abroad can also request Liberal Studies credit for courses taken abroad.
Students planning to study abroad should contact the Academic Programs Abroad Office for information and instructions regarding requesting Liberal Studies course offerings abroad and how to request credit for other courses taken abroad.
