The European bourgeois tragedy chronicles a history of gender relations in which love is just for silly love songs: the real issues are acquiescence, conformity, and brutal subjugation to social norms that structure power relationships across gender, class, and racial lines. Beyond the European context tragic love stories of post-colonialism and post-modernism will set the analysis of bourgeois values against a global backdrop. This course studies novels, plays and short works addressing social expectations and gender roles from the 18th to 20th century. Readings include the German bourgeois tragedy, Madame Bovary, Ibsen, Collette, Duras and Atwood. Instructor: Dr. Ann Rider |
