Oscar wilde

Course Description

This course will introduce not only the works, but also the life and times of the Irish author  Oscar Wilde (1854-1900.) Readings will cover selections from the full range of Wilde’s published works – comedy, tragedy, poetry, correspondence, essays, criticism, journalism, short stories and the novel. Consideration of Wilde’s life, marked by meteoric success and an equally dramatic fall, will lead to reflection on larger human issues of fate and free will, conformity vs. individuality, the role of the scholar and artist in society, and the value of truth and beauty.
