Career & Grad School Preparation

The University Honors Program regularly partners with professional career counselors from the Indiana State University Career Center to create specialized opportunities for Honors students to begin preparing for their careers.

Each semester we offer interactive workshops that focus on resume and cover letter development; interviewing skills; networking skills; preparing for graduate school and/or determining if graduate school is even the right route to take; and searching for full-time jobs, summer jobs, and internships. These workshops are generally small and give each participant opportunities to ask questions specific to her/his educational path, experiences, and goals.

International opportunities

All Honors students who study abroad will earn Honors credit for courses taken abroad. Honors credit earned abroad counts toward completion of the Honors curriculum. Additionally, Honors students beginning Fall 2009 or later who intend to complete the Global Perspectives track must have a study abroad experience to partially fulfill the requirements for that track.

In addition to spending a semester abroad, Honors students may also elect to participate in shorter study tours. These trips typically span 1-3 weeks and are often connected to material in an Honors course.

Networking with Campus guests

The ISU University Speaker Series invites a number of guests to campus each year who are prominent in their fields. Honors students frequently have opportunities to network with these speakers over dinner, in a classroom setting, or in an informal question and answer session in the Honors lounge. Past speakers and information about upcoming speakers can be viewed here: http://www.indstate.edu/speaker/index.htm

Additionally, the University Honors Program hosts a mini Speaker Series that primarily features guests from the ISU and local Terre Haute communities. This provides Honors students additional opportunities to network and learn from established professionals in a variety of fields.

National Honor Societies

Honors students are often eligible to become members of prestigious national and international honor societies, such as Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD), National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), and Golden Key International Honour Society. Members in such societies often have access to additional scholarship resources, a national network of peers, and leadership opportunities in the local chapters.

conference Presentations

Each spring, the Mid-East Honors Association (MEHA) Conference invites Honors students, faculty, and staff from over 100 colleges and universities across 8 states to share ideas about Honors classes, administration, advising, programming, and student organizations. It is also an opportunity for Honors students to present their undergraduate research projects in poster presentations or conference sessions.

MEHA Participants have opportunities to network and exchange ideas with individuals from other schools, explore the culture of a new city , and gain conference presentation experience to include on a resume. For more information, visit: http://www.mideasthonors.org/

Co-Curricular Field Experiences

Honors students are frequently invited to participate in co-curricular activities to further enhance their personal and professional development outside the classroom. These interdisciplinary experiences are designed to help students broaden their perspectives.

Most recently, a group of Honors students examined the impact poverty may have on K-12 education. The seminar involved culminated with a trip to a 4th grade class at the Charter School of the Dunes in Gary, IN and a visit from a group of middle school students living on the Navajo Nation in Pinon, AZ.  READ MORE ABOUT THE SEMINAR
