WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BALANCING HONORS WITH OTHER CAMPUS/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTS?
It is very helpful to have a planner to write down all assignments, activities, meetings, etc. By staying organized like this, you will have a visual to help you make choices as to which events and activities you would like to attend. Also, if you write in class assignments at the beginning of the semester when you get the syllabi for your classes, you will be able to plan extracurricular activities around your schoolwork.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE HONORS CLASS SO FAR, AND WHY?
My favorite Honors class so far has been my GH 101, which was called Poverty, Hunger, & Homelessness. Even though it was kind of depressing topic, I liked the class because the issues we discussed were ones that are very real and apparent in our world today, even right here in Terre Haute. Also, the professor who taught the course, Dr. Linda Maule, is quite the character! An enthusiastic professor always makes a class more enjoyable!
FAVORITE PLACES IN TERRE HAUTE:
Coffee Grounds, Barnes & Noble book store, Spring Creek Community Church, Hobby Lobby
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING AN HONORS STUDENT?
As an Honors student, I feel like I get more respect from ISU staff members than I would if I were not an Honors student. Also, I especially like that fact that Honors students get priority registration when the time comes to sign up for classes.
WHAT STUDY TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR FRESHMEN HONORS STUDENTS?
I tend to study best in my dorm room where it is quiet and there are no distractions. However, if you have a TV in your room that is much too tempting or you have loud neighbors, there are plenty of other good places to go. Coffee shops like Coffee Grounds usually have wireless internet and provide a good atmosphere for studying. Also, if the weather is nice (and it’s not too windy!) there are a lot of benches and tables around campus that are good places to hit the books.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR?
As a freshman this past year, it took some time to get used to things and figure out what I wanted to do with my time at college. I am excited for the next school year because I will feel more confident and at home here at ISU. I am also excited to meet all kinds of new people and help the incoming freshman class feel welcome!
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FRESHMEN HONORS STUDENTS?
College isn’t just about learning what is in your textbooks! It’s also about discovering how to be independent, making new friends, trying new activities, and working with those who are different from you. You can’t learn these things if you are always in your dorm room studying. I am not at all suggesting you should neglect your school work and go out partying every night, but there is such a thing as too much studying. Every once in a while, give yourself a break from the books and go do something you enjoy!
