HR Training

Orientation:

All new support staff employees who are eligible for staff benefits are required to attend.  Orientation includes PowerPoint presentations by Human Resources and the Support Staff Council and requires completing paperwork for Employment, Payroll and Staff Benefits.  Mentors are assigned to new employees to provide support during and after the introductory period.  The mentors will also take new employees on a short tour of campus at the end of orientation.  Orientation is generally conducted from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Monday.

Foundations of Supervision:

The Foundations of Supervision workshop is a program designed to provide foundational information about the roles and responsibilities of first time supervisors.  The program is usually held in late October or early November each year.  There are two sessions conducted on consecutive mornings from 9 – 11 a.m. and participants must be able to attend both sessions.  The program will be filled on a first come – first served basis.

Supervisory Certification:

Human Resources wants every ISU employee supervising (or on a path to supervise) another staff member to have the opportunity to develop or enhance their supervisory skills.  To be certified through the program, participants must attend the twelve core workshops and at least four electives, plus pass an assessment covering materials presented in the core classes.  Workshops begin in February and are conducted each Wednesday morning through the end of May.  Employees who are actually supervising at least one full time staff member and want to be certified will be given first consideration; if there are still spots available, then those who do not actually supervise but want to be certified in preparation for becoming a supervisor will be given consideration.  Class size will be limited to 30 participants.  Human Resources understands that supervising others can be challenging.   Enhanced supervisory skills can result in reduced absenteeism and turnover, higher job satisfaction and increased productivity.  We encourage all supervisors of staff members who have not completed the course to consider making an investment in this program.  Questions about the program or course content may be direct to Tami Weinzapfel-Smith in Human Resources at extension 4114 or contact Tami by e-mail at tsmith19@isugw.indstate.edu

Information regarding registration for Foundations of Supervision and Supervisory Certification will be sent via e-mail prior to the start of the workshops.

Mentoring Training:

In conjunction with the Support Staff Council, Human Resources has initiated a mentoring program.  Support Staff members who are interested in becoming a mentor will go through two one hour sessions on mentoring new employees.
