Communication Skills 1
In Communication Skills Level 1, students learn to incorporate basic grammar structures into everyday speech. They develop confidence in simple social interactions, such as asking questions, making suggestions, and expressing their preferences and needs. They become accustomed to hearing simplified English at nearly normal speed. They gain cross-cultural awareness by working with other international students in groups and by interviewing Americans. They learn to follow classroom directions and take responsibility for their own achievement. Some of the activities used to develop these skills include giving short oral presentations to the class, visiting a supermarket, and performing skits. These activities are intended to involve students in an active way that will naturally augment their listening comprehension, speaking ability, grammar, and vocabulary.
