Helping the students to develop their
confidence as well as their competence in conversational
situations is a critical part of this course. By participating
in presentations at elementary schools in the community
and by acting out scenes from popular movies, students
can experience a sense of being able to communicate
important and meaningful ideas and emotions in English.
At the same time, while preparing for these activities,
students take the time to focus on appropriate responses
in specific cultural contexts and they work on improving
their pronunciation. Just as it frequently occurs in
both social and academic situations, a number of activities
emphasize problem solving and cooperation while working
in groups.
Besides acting out movie scenes and
giving presentations to elementary school students,
students visit a travel agency in order to help them
to prepare for creating their own travel agency that
then "sells" travel packages to ILC "customers."
They also interview other ILC students as a way to develop
their interviewing skills and as a basis for discussion.
The information obtained in these interviews is used
as the basis for a formal presentation. Finally, listening
is a skill that is given a great deal of attention at
this level. Students practice listening to level-appropriate
academic lectures, they develop and maintain listening
logs, and they do an out-of-class listening activity
that involves the regular listening to an episodic story
(book on tape, Connect with English, a television series,
etc.).
