Reading & Writing 4
In Reading/Writing level 4, students will show an ability to read and comprehend a typical magazine or newspaper article. They will also learn to write clear, concise summaries of these articles. One project the students must complete is the creation of a website about themselves. This website will include a homepage and two links. The major assignment for this class is the students must write a 5-6 page research paper. Much of the class is spent preparing the students to complete this assignment. They will learn to do research by using the online databases and library catalog. They will be taught correct citation and reference forms. In order to help them successfully complete the paper, the students must work on reading and writing skills. They will learn to use context clues and previewing to improve their reading comprehension. Also they will need to practice paraphrasing. Obviously, writing grammatically correct, comprehensible sentences is important at this level. Finally, the students will read and understand a full-length adult novel. All of the skills that are taught at this level will help prepare students to do research at the college level.
