Upward Bound
who is eligible?
The US Department of Education places guidelines in governing
eligible participants for Upward Bound projects. According to the Code
of Federal Regulations, students must meet each of the following:
- Must be either:
- A citizen or a national of the United States
- A permanent resident of the United States
- Is in the United States for other than a temporary purpose
and provides evidence from INS of his or her intent to become a
permanent resident
- A permanent resident of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands,
or the Trust Territory of the Pacific Island
- A resident of the Freely Associated States--the Federated
States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or
the Republic of Palau
- Must be either a potential first-generation college student
and/or come from a low-income family, as determined by the US
Department of Education. (See low-income guidelines below)
- Has a need for academic support in order to pursue successfully
a program of education beyond high school.
- At the time of selection, has completed the 8th grade but has
not entered the 12th grade
- Is at least 13 years old but not older than 19.
