What is Jiu-Jitsu?
There are many "styles" of Jiu-Jitsu, each with its own philosophy and
training methodology. Japanese based styles of Jiu-Jitsu are known for
their intricate upper body techniques while Brazilian styles focus
more on ground based techniques. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become the
most popular style in the United States due to its transferability to
sport completion. This type of Jiu-Jitsu closely resembles western
wrestling and Judo which is currently being taught n the Department of
Physical Education. While the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu are easily
modified to work in self-defense situations, sport Jiu-Jitsu relies
heavily on methods of grappling that can be performed safely on
practitioners. By adopting the "sport approach" to Jiu-Jitsu, Le Club
hopes to offer practitioners an avenue of fitness, self-discipline,
self-confidence and camaraderie that is missing in many health clubs.
What if I
have never participated in any marital arts?
The Le Club Jiu-Jitsu program is designed for beginners and veteran
martial artist alike. In fact, it is sometimes easier for a person to
learn Jiu-Jitsu if they have never studied any other martial art then
it is for someone who has experience in a different art. Jiu-Jitsu is
taught in such a manner that stresses the need for developing
foundation skills. These same skills are just as important to an
experienced Jiu-Jitsu practitioner as they are to a beginner. Thus
each practice session will focus on these basic skills.
Are the
classes run like boot camp?
The Le Club Jiu-Jitsu classes are taught in a friendly and encouraging
tone. The atmosphere is one of respect and team work. A structured yet
relaxed approach to this type of activity is much more conducive to
learning than a militaristic method. As in all martial arts there are
certain aspects of self-discipline, respect and protocol to which
participants will adhere. These aspects are for the safety of the
participants and to ensure the integrity of the art is maintained.
What are
the risks involved in participating in Jiu-Jitsu?
There are certain risks involved in the participation of any martial
art or any sport where wrestling-type techniques are used. Most
injuries in martial arts, wrestling, and sports, in general occur for
two reasons. One, the practitioner performs the techniques in an
incorrect manner or is using the technique in a sloppy manner during
horseplay. The second most common reason for injury in sport training
is fatigue. Le Club Jiu-Jitsu training will be conducted in a manner
that prepares participants both physically and technically to safely
enjoy the practice of the martial art.
