Julie Bevilacqua Cutter Memorial
Scholarship: Awarded to a foreign born, full-time
[undergraduate or graduate] student majoring or minoring in language
education and who has demonstrated academic excellence.
Outstanding Undergraduate Graduating Senior:
Selected by the LLL faculty each year for
recognition by the College of Arts and Sciences as the Department's
outstanding undergraduate student from among its graduating seniors.
Mary Olga Peters Award: Established in honor
of Mary Olg Peters, who served on the ISU faculty for 34 years and
was chairperson of the LLL department for nine years (1954-63).
The department-wide award is presented to a student majoring in the
department who holds membership in Phi Sigma Iota, plans to teach in
a language, and demonstrates qualities of leadership and good
character.
FRENCH
Michael D. Buzash-Le Cercle Français Scholarship:
Chosen by the French faculty, the award, in
the name of former ISU language faculty Michael D. Buzash, is
given to a student who is majoring or minoring in French, who
has completed at least one year of French at Indiana State and
has attained the minimum GPA of 3.6 or equivalent in French and
a minimum of 3.5 at Indiana State and represents high quality
work in French and outside the department.
Martha Royse French Prize:
Chosen by the French faculty and given to a student for
excellence in first-year French.
Karen Graesch Lukens Scholarship in French:
Selected by the French faculty for
recognition of excellence in French studies. Recipient
must be studying French and pursuing a major in the Department
of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics.
GERMAN
Charlotte W. Ghurye Memorial Scholarships:
These awards are at the bequest of
Professor Charlotte W. Ghurye, professor of German at Indiana
State University from 1968-1991, and are given to support German
studies at Indiana State. Recipients are chosen by the
German faculty based on their academic excellence in German.
Frances Sanders Memorial German Scholarship (given by the
Terre Haute Oberlandler Club):
LATIN
Lillian-Gay Berry Memorial Latin Awards:
Granted annually from an
endowment established in 1953 by Lillian Gay Berry, Indiana
State University class of 1895. A professor of Latin at Indiana
University for 41 years (1902-1941), she was named an ISU
Distinguished Alumna in 1957. She died at the age of 90 in 1962.
Award recipients are selected by the department's Latin faculty
on the basis of high quality of character, scholarship and
leadership.
Gertrud Ewing Latin Scholarship:
The Gertrude Ewing Awards
were established in 1971 by Indiana State University Latin
alumni in honor of Gertrude Ewing, Professor of Latin at ISU
from 1931 to 1969. Under Miss Ewing’s guidance, the Gamma Alpha
Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi was founded more than 50 years ago.
Recipients, chosen by the department's Latin faculty, maintain
her high standards of scholarship, her love of learning, her
commitment to teaching, and her enthusiasm for all things
Classical.
SPANISH
Excellence in Spanish Award:
Awarded to a student among Spanish graduate
and undergraduate majors and minors in recognition of excellent
performance.
Michael D. Buzash-El Circulo Español Award:
Named for former ISU language faculty
Michael D. Buzash and given to an outstanding first-year student
in Spanish enrolled at Indiana State University, as selected by
a committee of the Spanish faculty and the Chairperson.
Spanish Achievement Award: Given in
recognition of high academic performance in Spanish.
LINGUISTICS/TESL
Outstanding First-Year Graduate Student in LLL:
Selected by LLL graduate faculty in recognition of outstanding
performance in their first year of graduate study.
Alva E. Davis Award: Given in honor of
Dr. Alva E. Davis, a 1938 graduate of Indiana State University
(then Indiana State Teachers College) and a major contributor to
the Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada, in
gratitude for his generous bequest to our department. The
award is given to a graduating Masters student who is pursuing a
career in linguistics/TESL (Teaching English as a Second
Language).
College of Arts and Sciences Foundations Scholarships
The following scholarships especially fit students from the

David C. and Margaret L. Campbell Endowed Scholarship for
the Liberal Arts
Eligibility Requirements: You must be a major in
Communication; History, Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics;
Philosophy; or Political Science. You must intend to attend
graduate school or law school, be an Indiana resident, be
enrolled full time at Junior or Senior standing and ranked in

Raymond J. Reece and Frances R. Kepner Scholarship
The Raymond J. Reece and Frances R. Kepner Scholarship was
established by Raymond Reece Kepner and his wife, Trischa J.
O'Hanlon in honor of Mr. Kepner's grandfather and mother - who
cumulatively served on the faculty of Indiana State University
for over fifty years.
Eligibility Requirements: You must be a Junior or Senior major
in Arts and Sciences and have a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA

Thelma F. Mills Work-Study Scholarship
This scholarship fund was given by Ms. Mills in sacred memory
of her parents, J. Edward and Lillie F. Mills and her brother E.
Lenley Mills. Ms. Thelma Mills received a B.S. degree in 1932
and a M.A. in 1955 from ISU. She was a public school teacher for
37 years. In addition to her commitment to teaching, Ms. Mills
was dedicated to the idea of establishing a fund which would
assist worthy students engage in meaningful work experience as
they earn a degree at ISU.
Eligibility Requirements:You should be engaged in meaningful
work experience related to your vocational/professional
objectives, not to exceed 20 hours per week during the academic
year (which may include unpaid internships). Your statement of
application should describe how your vocational/professional
objectives are advanced by your work experience. Please note in
addition to two faculty references, you must submit a
recommendation from your employer.

Real World 101
Real World 101 was created through a generous donation by ISU
alumni. The program seeks to ease the eventual transition to the
work place for ISU students in the traditional liberal arts and
sciences by providing an opportunity to job shadow and
participate in career-transition experiences prior to graduation
term.
Eligibility Requirements: Your statement of application should
discuss your current professional goals, your learning goals,
how your learning goals and experiences prepare you to meet your
professional goals, the value of a liberal arts education, and
define "real world" from your point of view. Preference will be
given to student approaching graduation. Real World
Scholars are expected to participate in several activities
designed to enhance your orientation to the professional
workplace, including a resume building workshop, mock interview,
Networking and Etiquette Workshop, and Organizational Culture
seminar provided through the ISU Career Center. You must
register with Sycamore Career Link at the ISU Career Center. You
are required to complete a one-week shadowing experience during
the regularly scheduled spring break week and participate in a
"debrief" before the end of the spring semester, which includes
submission of a reflective essay describing your shadowing
experience according to a set of questions you will be given
prior to the experience.
