LANGUAGE STUDIES MINOR with a focus on French (18 hours)

Core Requirement: LLL 200 Intro. to Language and Culture for Students of LLL--3 hrs.;

3 hours in a second language or linguistics course (i.e., not French)--may be at the 100 level. 

12 hours in French, to include at least 6 hours at the 300/400 level, for example:

• FREN  201--3 hrs. Intermediate French I (or the equivalent high school study)
• FREN 202--3 hrs.  Intermediate French II (or the equivalent high school study)
• FREN 301--3 hrs.  Advanced French Grammar
• FREN 303--3 hrs.  Readings in French 
  FREN 321--3 hrs.  Advanced French Conversation

A minimum 2.5 GPA in all LLL coursework must be maintained.  No coursework below the 200-level may be counted toward the minor.

LANGUAGE STUDIES MAJOR with a focus on FRENCH (31 hours)

Required LLL Courses: LLL 200 Intro. to Language and Culture for Students of LLL--3 hrs.;
LLL 400 Senior Seminar for Students of LLL - 1 hr.

3 hours in a second language or linguistics course (i.e., not French)--may be at the 100 level. 

18 hours in French at the 300/400 level; for example:

• FREN 301--3 hrs.  Advanced French Grammar
• FREN 303--3 hrs.  Readings in French
• FREN 321--3 hrs.  Advanced French Conversation
• FREN 404--3 hrs. French Phonetics or FREN 405--3 hrs. French Conversation and Civilization
• 6 hours of Study Abroad Credit

6 hours of course work from within the Department or approved cognate course work from another Department; for example:

• FREN 201--3 hrs. Intermediate French I (or the equivalent high school study)
• FREN 202--3 hrs.  Intermediate French II (or the equivalent high school study)

An applied experience component within the 31 hours.  May consist of a minimum of 6 credit hours of appropriate study abroad OR [under rare circumstances] a minimum of 3 semester hours in LLL 409 in an approved internship. (The applied experience requirement may be waived for second majors.) 

LANGUAGE STUDIES--FRENCH TEACHING MAJOR (31 hours)

This major also requires completion of  the College of Education's  Professional Education Sequence for Licensure to teach in Indiana public schools.

Required LLL courses (7 hours minimum): Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics 200--3 hrs.;  402--1 hr.; Linguistics 420--3 hrs.

 Required courses (6 hours): 

• FREN 201--3 hrs. Intermediate French I (or the equivalent high school study)
• FREN 202--3 hrs.  Intermediate French II (or the equivalent high school study)

Electives (18 hours):  300/400-level course work which must include  6 hours of culture, 3 hours of literature,3 hours of advanced grammar and 3 hours of oral fluency.  For example:

• FREN 301--3 hrs.  Advanced French Grammar
• FREN 303--3 hrs.  Readings in French
• FREN 321--3 hrs.  Advanced French Conversation
• FREN 405--3 hrs.  French Conversation and Civilization 
• 6 hours of Study abroad

 An applied experience component within the 31 hours.  Must consist of at least 6 hours of 300/400-level course work taken in study abroad.

SCHOLARSHIPS and AWARDS

The French program awards several scholarships each year to outstanding students, including:

• The Martha Royse French Prize for excellence in first-year French.
• The Michael D. Buzash-Le Cercle Français Scholarship for excellence in French. 
• Karen Graesch Lukens Scholarship in French: Selected by the French faculty for recognition of excellence in French studies.  Recipient must be studying French and pursuing a major in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics.

The LLL Department also offers the following department-wide awards:  

• The Mary Olga Peters Award is  presented to a student majoring in the Department who holds membership in Phi Sigma Iota, plans to teach in a language, and demonstrates qualities of leadership and good character. 

•  The Julie Bevilacqua Cutter Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a foreign born, full-time [undergraduate or graduate] student majoring or minoring in language education, who has demonstrated academic excellence.
