Scholar Biography:
I am a senior majoring in Sociology and have recently chosen a minor in Philosophy. This summer my research project will be a literature review on dating attitudes, rape myth acceptance, and rape victim blame. This fall I will construct a survey and administer it to samples at no less than three demographically different colleges and universities, then see how attitudes, myth acceptance, and victim blame compare amongst them. By spring of 2008, I would like to present these finding in conference. My ultimate academic goal is to earn a Ph. D. I am not yet sure if I would like to enter into research and teaching or counseling. I have considered graduate programs at Baylor University, Ball State University, and the University of Maryland.
I was initially drawn to the field of Sociology and other social sciences, such as psychology and social-psychology, because I found in them a fascinating way to better understand my own development and behaviors, and especially, a way to understand some of the processes that went into some of the choices I made throughout my troubled adolescent years. This process of self-discovery through the social sciences still motivates my learning, but I am further driven that one day I will be an advocate for those in need and be able to share this knowledge so that they may come to be more knowledgeable and accepting of themselves.
