Department of Music

Music Degrees

The Department of Music offers undergraduate degree programs in music performance, music education, music business, music theory, and liberal arts. Graduate programs include degree offerings in music performance, music education, music history and literature, music theory, music composition, and wind conducting. The Department of Music is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and consists of over 25 full-time teachers and several part-time teachers.

Undergraduate Degree Programs

• The Bachelor of Music Education degree is intended for those students who wish to teach music in the schools at the elementary, middle, or high school level.

• The Bachelor of Music in Performance degree is designed for those students who wish to pursue graduate study and seek teaching positions in higher education or for those who wish to establish private studios and/or become composers.

• The Bachelor of Science in Music/Business and the Bachelor of Arts in Music/Business degrees merge business and musical expertise, preparing the graduate to enter the music industry with an ability to interact with professionals in both music and business.

• The Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts degrees with a major in music combine the best of the University's General Studies Program with formal musical preparation, for students who wish to pursue graduate study in music or other areas in the Humanities.

• Specialized training, certificate programs, and/or academic concentrations are also available in the areas of Piano Pedagogy, Composition, Music History and Literature, Music Theory, and Jazz Studies. An internationally recognized teaching staff offers courses designed to introduce the university student to these areas, with practical experience being a large part of each program.

• Students may choose piano, voice, woodwind, brass, strings, or percussion as their performance emphasis. Other course work includes music theory and music skills (ear training and sight singing), keyboard harmony, music history and literature, conducting, and pedagogical methods and philosophies. Many courses include supervised practical experience.

Minor in Music

• The Minor in Music and Minor in Music Theater are designed for those students who wish to continue their formal study of music, but primarily wish to earn a degree in another field. As with all other degree choices, the music minor student is eligible to perform in University choral and vocal ensembles, bands, orchestras, percussion groups, and chamber ensembles.

• Master of Music (M.M.)
  This degree may be earned with a specialization in music performance (choral conducting, wind conducting; keyboard, percussion, strings, woodwinds, brass instruments; and voice), or with a specialization in academic areas (music theory, music history and literature, or composition), or in music education.
