Tucker awarded President's Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Service

Alexus Tucker of Indianapolis has received this year's President's Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Service in recognition of her contributions to Indiana State University. The award is presented annually to a junior or senior who has made community service an integral part of his or her college experience.

Tucker is a senior and is completing a bachelor's degree in communication with a public relations emphasis while minoring in psychology and civic leadership.

The student representative on the university's board of trustees, Tucker has been active in the Student Government Association, serving as a senator and freshman council vice president. She was also active in the Public Relations Student Society of America; EcoCar Outreach Team; a residence hall assistant; student admissions representative and orientation leader; treasurer of Omicron Delta Kappa, national leadership honorary society; and served as president of the Student African-American Sisterhood.

She has served internships with Indiana House of Representatives and Guidance Life Skills and Mentoring (GLAM); attended the Democratic National Convention; participated in Alternative Spring Break; served as a mentor with the Vigo County School Corp.; participated in the Tsinghua University Summer Service Learning Program; and served as a speaker during the university's 2011 New Student Convocation.

Tucker is the daughter of Felicia and Courtney Tucker. She is a graduate of Warren Central High School. Following commencement, she intends to complete an internship in Washington, DC, and pursue employment in public service for the next three years, then enroll in a master of public affairs program.
