Saxophone and guitar duo to perform March 19

Duo Montagnard, featuring saxophonist Joseph Murphy and guitarist Matthew Slotkin, will present a recital on March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts.

Murphy and Slotkin formed Duo Montagnard in 2002. They have performed more than 200 concerts in 49 states, eight Canadian provinces and 15 countries, spanning five continents. In addition to commissioning and premiering 15 pieces, they have recorded three albums.

The program will include: "Entr-acte," by Jacques Ibert; "Aasai Neelaavey," by David Claman; "Tauhara," by Martin Lodge; "Interspheres," by Tom Schuttenhelm; "Deux Movements," by Caroline Charrier; "Pluck, Blow," by Greg Caffery; "Sakka Blue Valentine," by Peter Terry and "On the Edge," by Laura Kramer.

Murphy is saxophone professor at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Bowling Green State University and a master's degree and doctorate from Northwestern University. He received a Fulbright Award for a year of study in Bordeaux, France where he received a Premier Prix. Murphy has premiered over 40 new works and is a clinician for the Selmer Corporation and Rico Corporation and has been recorded on Erol (France), Mark, and Opus One labels.

Slotkin is one of the most prominent young guitarists in the United States, appearing in leading venues throughout North America and Europe. He has achieved success in solo performance, chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra. His first CD, "Twentieth Century Music for Guitar," was released by Centaur Records. Slotkin directs the guitar program at Bloomsburg University. He received undergraduate degrees and his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied guitar with Nicholas Goluses.
