Indiana State to observe Women's Equality Day, Aug. 26

August 25, 2014

Women's Equality Day on Aug. 26 celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted suffrage to American women in 1920. Indiana State's faculty, staff and students have organized several events to examine the past, present and future of women's leadership, political rights and power.

12:30-1:45 p.m. - "Tomorrow's Women Leaders" (Cunningham Memorial Library's events area). In May, six Indiana State students attended the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in College Park, Md. They will share what they learned during a panel discussion.

2-3:15 p.m. - "Women in Politics" (Cunningham Memorial Library's events area). Political scientists Lynn Maurer and Carly Schmitt will examine some of today's pressing political questions for the world's women. Maurer will speak about "An International Look at Women Making Politics," and Schmitt will share her thoughts on "Awaiting Madam President: Women in U.S. Politics."

6 p.m. (5:30 p.m. assembly) - "Women's Equality Day March: Climbing the Ladder of Equality" (Indiana State parking lot east of University Hall). Participants may dress as a historical female/male character in the living history portion of the event, a marcher, a volunteer, an audience member or a combination of these. A trolley will be available for those individuals who would like to participate but have difficulty marching. Personal hygiene items will be collected to donate to local women's shelters.

6-8:15 p.m. - Movie "Iron Jawed Angels," which follows Alice Paul's National Women's Party and the final stage of the long struggle for women's suffrage in the United States. (Cunningham Memorial Library's events area).

8:30 p.m.-10:45 p.m. - Repeat showing of "Iron Jawed Angels" (Cunningham Memorial Library's events area).

The events are sponsored by the Feminist Majority, Women's Studies, Interdisciplinary Programs, American Democracy Project, Center for Community Engagement, Honors College, University College, College of Arts and Sciences, League of Women Voters and the Cunningham Memorial Library.
