Indiana State nominated twice in National Student Production Awards

September 9, 2014

Indiana State University student broadcasters Kurt Darling, Cole Smith and AJ Patiag have been selected as finalists in two categories of the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) National Student Production Awards.

"As part of the student media team at Indiana State, we are proud to announce the accomplishments of these three students and the WISU station for the hard work they pursued to achieve these awards," said Richard Green, WISU-FM manager.

CBI represents students in television, broadcasting, radio, social media and other electronic media sources. It promotes student success and active involvement in the media setting. CBI finalists compete against three others in their same category for the award. The awards will be announced in October at this year's convention in Seattle.

Darling, news and sports operations director for WISU, is a finalist in Best Sports Reporting. Darling has been with WISU for four years and this is his first award in the CBI event. He was nominated for his daily sports report on local college and professional teams. The senior from Brownsburg is majoring in communication with a minor in education. After graduating from Indiana State, he hopes to be a play-by-play sports analyst and coach track and field on the side.

Smith and AJ Patiag, program director for WISU, are finalists in the category of Best Public Service Announcement for a clip they produced about bullying. Smith and Patiag have also been with the WISU station for four years and have been nominated for their first award from the CBI event.

Smith is a senior communication major from Crawfordsville with a minor in sociology. He plans to pursue a career in the gaming industry after he graduates.

Patiag is also a senior from Indianapolis and is majoring in communication with a minor in marketing. Following completion of his studies at Indiana State, he plans to tour with his band and work in a productions studio for both film and radio.
