Room and board set for '16-'17; rates reduced for two residence halls

Indiana State University room and board rates are in place for the 2016-17 academic year. University trustees on Friday approved a fee schedule that reflects a 2.9 percent increase for a standard residence hall room and meal plan while the cost at some facilities will decline.

"As the university continues to strategically invest in improved student housing, rates are reviewed annually to ensure student housing remains affordable and that rooms are categorized with the appropriate rate," said Diann McKee, senior vice president for business affairs and finance. "For 2016-17, room types have been modified to more accurately reflect amenities offered based on the recent renovations of the majority of the residence halls."

Rates at Lincoln Quad, Hines and Jones halls will be $9,785.20 per year, a nearly $235 reduction at Hines and Jones, which were last renovated more than 15 years ago. The cost at residence halls that have been renovated more recently - Sandison, Burford, Erickson, Pickerl, Mills and Blumberg - will be $10,295.20, the same rate as a double room with a shared bath at Reeve Hall, which opened in fall 2014. An economy rate of $9,061 per year will be available at Rhoads Hall, which will be the only active residence hall without air conditioning next year.

Trustees approved fees for employee health insurance for 2016. The university's claims costs during the past year have been better than health care trends nationally, resulting in a 4.9 percent increase in monthly premiums, an increase that is 1.4 percent lower than last year.

Employees and their dependents will continue to pay less if they participate in the university's wellness initiative and don't use tobacco products and workers with household incomes less than 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines will continue to be eligible for a university subsidy to reduce their monthly costs.

Also on Thursday, Indiana State trustees:

• Heard from university President Dan Bradley that an interim student grievance policy has been developed and plans are to submit a "permanent" policy for approval in February

• Approved modifications to the faculty constitution to acknowledge University College, which does not have independent faculty, and to bylaws concerning an advocate for temporary faculty and aligning the eligibility and nomination timeframe for faculty awards

• Approved a proposal to clarify expenses covered by program specific fees paid by master's degree students in physician assistant studies and occupational therapy and Doctor of Physical Therapy students

• Amended Staff Council bylaws to reflect the addition of the new Division of University Engagement and the recent name change for the Division of Finance and Administration

• Approved an honorary doctorate of humane letters for philanthropist Gayle Cook in recognition of her extensive historic preservation work, including advice on the recent renovation of the university's Normal Hall

• Acknowledged receipt of the 2014-15 audited financial statement and report of the President's Council on Diversity.
