President’s Scholars announced for 2016-17

Indiana State University has announced the recipients of its most esteemed scholarship for the 2016-2017 school year.

The President's Scholarship, awarded to 20 incoming students, provides full, in-state tuition and premium housing and has a total four-year value of more than $78,000.

"The weather in January may be cold on the campus of Indiana State, but the competition heats up inside Hulman Memorial Student Union, as some of the best and brightest high school seniors from Indiana and across the nation, gather to compete on two consecutive weekends for the prestigious President's Scholarship awards," said John Beacon, senior vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications.

This year, the previously awarded $4,000 Academic Excellence scholarships were upgraded to $6,000 President's Academic Excellence scholarships, much to the delight of students and parents alike.

"Although only 20 of the approximately 180 applicants receive the scholarships, each student is already a winner by the mere fact they qualified receive this honor. This event is truly wonderful to take part in, as these students are a delight to meet and engage in conversation," Beacon said.

The recipients are chosen based on their academic merit during their time in high school, personal accomplishments and interviews during their on campus visits.

Alexa Kinsey of Shirley, Ind., is the daughter of Brent and Amber Kinsey. In high school, she was the president of National Honor Society and led both the Raider Rowdie Pep Squad and the Gold Rush Dance Squad and participated in Riley Dance Marathon and Operation Christmas Child. Kinsey will be pursuing a nursing degree.

 

 

 

Alexandra Malmborg of Burbank, Ill., is the daughter of Steven and Terri Malmborg. In high school, she was the vice president of National Honor Society. She also worked at Burbank Water Park and participated in Swimming and Track and Field. Malmborg plans to major in nursing.

 

 

 

 

Allison Engstrom of Beaverton, Ore., is the daughter of Kenneth and Kathryn Engstrom. She volunteered with the Oregon Humane Society and the Portland Marathon. She swam for Southridge High School and the Multnomah Athletic Club and will continue the competing as a Sycamore. Engstrom plans to pursue a pre-medicine track at Indiana State.

 

 

 

 

Alyssa Yocom of Reelsville, Ind., is the daughter of Steven Kent and Jennifer Yocom. She participated in Spanish Club, National Honor Society and multiple community service projects at Clay City High School. She was also the captain of the basketball and softball teams. Yocom plans to major in athletic training.

 

 

 

 

Benjamin Walden of Evansville, Ind., is the son of Scott and Angela Walden. He was active in his high school band program, playing both piano and clarinet. He was involved in 4-H, National Honor Society and his church's youth programs. Walden will be pursuing a degree in music education.

 

 

 

 

Brooke Hendricks of Fishers, Ind., is the daughter of Steve and Amy Hendricks. At Fishers High School, she helped with Riley Dance Marathon and Special Olympics and played softball. She was also a counselor at her church's vacation Bible school. Hendricks will be pursuing a degree in business administration.

 

 

 

 

Carolyn Engle of Xenia, Ohio, is the daughter of Michael and Lynn Engle. In high school, she was a member of National Honor Society and taught second grade Sunday school at her church. She also played flute, alto saxophone and hand bells in various school and church ensembles. Engle will be pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology.

 

 

 

 

Cole Donaldson, of Paris, Ill., is the son of Paulette Donaldson. In high school, he was involved in band, choir and drama. He was also in National Honor Society and participated in scholastic bowl. Donaldson plans to major in English Teaching.

 

 

 

 

 

Courtney Ferguson of Terre Haute is the daughter of Scott and Lisa Ferguson. She participated in marching band and symphonic band, key club, National Honor Society and 4-H. Ferguson will be pursuing a degree in management.

 

 

 

 

 

Emma Hayward of Warsaw, Ind., is the daughter of Brian and Michelle Hayward. She ran cross-country and track in high school and was a leader in her church as well. Hayward plans to major in elementary education at Indiana State.

 

 

 

 

 

Evan Bockover of Greensburg, Ind., is the son of Charles and Wendy Bockover. Bockover was a member of his school's football team, the Junior Optimist Club and he participated on the School Improvement Team and was also a member of the National Honor Society. Evan plans to pursue a degree in athletic training at Indiana State.

 

 

 

 

Hayley Tague of Terre Haute is the daughter of Christopher and Janice Tague. In high school, she was a member of National Honor Society, 4-H, German Club and Robotics Club. At Indiana State, Tague will be majoring in engineering technology.

 

 

 

 

 

Jordyn Taylor of Terre Haute is the daughter of Heather Jacks and Rodney Taylor. She was a member of National Honor Society, link crew, and was active in community service. Taylor will pursue a degree in criminology and criminal justice at Indiana State.

 

 

 

 

 

Joshua McCammon of Effingham, Ill., is the son of Samuel and Paula McCammon. In high school, Joshua was involved in band, cross country and track. He was the co-captain of both the cross-country team and the distance unit of the track and field team. He was also active in his church. McCammon plans to major in business administration.

 

 

 

 

Katelyn Nuthak of Shelbyville, Ind., is the daughter of Thomas and Deanna Nuthak. During high school, she was involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Mentor Mentee Program, National Honor Society and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She also played for her school's softball team and completed multiple community services projects. Nuthak plans to major in marketing at Indiana State

 

 

 

Madeline Hellmich of Greensburg, Ind., is the daughter of Jon and Jamie Hellmich. In high school, she played basketball and soccer and was also involved in National Honor Society, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters. Hellmich will pursue a degree in social work.

 

 

 

 

Madison Michalic of Clinton, Ind., is the daughter of Jeff and Buffy Michalic. While in high school, she participated in cheerleading and track and field, was member of National Honor Society, Hoosier Girls' State and student council. Michalic will be majoring in elementary education.

 

 

 

 

 

Joshua Bruce of Zionsville, Ind., is the son of David and Julie Bruce. He was involved in many activities in high school including band, choir, cross-country and track. Bruce was also a member of the National Spanish Honor Society and the Boy Scouts of America. He plans on majoring in business education.

 

 

 

Paige Welsh of Kokomo, Ind., is the daughter of James and Kristina Welsh. In high school, she completed various community service activities, was a student tutor, a member of student council and National Honor Society. She also ran track and cross-country. She will major in dietetics at Indiana State.

 

 

 

 

Stefani Williams of North Vernon, Ind., is the daughter of Mark and Dawn Williams. She played violin in her school's orchestra, was on student council and the tennis team and was involved in National Honor Society. Williams plans on pursuing a degree in nursing at Indiana State.
