Artists, sponsors sought for public art event
“This is the newest, most exciting artistic/architectural event in the Wabash Valley,” said Lustig, chairman of the event. “The ‘Walk’ will allow area families, individuals, businesses and organizations help transform the ISU campus walkways into an exhibition of the public’s creative talent.”
The exciting exhibition will feature one-of-a-kind polystyrene form sycamore leaves designed and sponsored (purchased) by local residents/businesses and will be creatively altered to meet each individual’s or group’s creative fantasy. The only creative restrictions are that leaves cannot display corporate design logos or offensive or controversial messages. Completed leaves will be displayed during the Crossroads ArtsFest in the public spaces of the ISU campus. The
“leaves” are actually blank, primer-treated polystyrene forms that
are available in two sizes: 62”
by 52” or 15” by 16”. ISU will provide sponsors with the forms and
each sponsor will hire a creative agent (or artist) to transform it into
a work of art.
Any person may be a part of the “Walk Through the Sycamores” by submitting his or her name and sample designs to become a creative agent. All creative people — artists, photographers, architects, graphic designers, etc. — are welcome and encouraged to be a part of this exciting exhibit. Creative agents are guaranteed copyright to their work and are encouraged to solicit their own sponsors from within the community or act as their own sponsor. Sponsors may select a design provided by a creative agent from the “Walk Through the Sycamores” file on the ISU Web site or have a design of his or her own developed. Cost of hiring a creative agent (names and designs will be available on the Web site) includes all materials and fees and a $150 stipend for the artist. Purchase of a large leaf is $350 or $500 if a creative agent is selected, while small leaves cost $40. Creative agents may not be commissioned to decorate the small leaves. Sponsors may choose a suggested design or create their own. Artists will creatively alter the leaf forms by using processes such as painting, collage or mosaic. Artists are encouraged to submit an unlimited number of design proposals for potential sponsors to view. “Walk Through the Sycamores” began with a large wooden sculpture created by artist John Siblik. Carefully carved and sanded, the original leaf was taken to a local business, Hoosier Fiberglass, where the first 10 polystyrene prototypes were formed. Small ceramic leaves were later created by ISU student Jeff Garrett. Chicago’s “Cows on Parade,” where hundreds of creatively painted cows promenaded through the streets of Chicago the summer of 1999, was originally conceived by Beat Seeberger-Quin and presented in Zurich, Switzerland, during the summer of 1998. Leaves
will be made in bulk from the original sculptures and will be available
shortly after purchase in Normal Hall on the ISU campus. Additional
pick-up points will be at the Chicago Southland Arts Incubator in
Chicago Heights and the Indianapolis Arts Center in Broad Ripple. If
local businesses select a creative agent from one of these areas,
delivery can be arranged. Sponsors are encouraged to get involved as soon as possible in selecting a creative agent. The earlier sponsors are paired with creative agents, the more time they will have to completely and properly execute their designs for the leaves. All leaves and names of sponsors will be recognized in a beautiful full-color booklet.
