Reserving a Computer Lab
Information Technology has several Microcomputer labs for usage of network
software such as popular word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and
internet applications.
Students are available in each lab to assist students, staff and faculty
with questions. The normal expectation of students, faculty, and staff is
that the labs and clusters are available for unscheduled work such as
preparing assignments; however, most of these facilities may be reserved for
such uses as seminars, classes, or workshops. Class use may be on a one-time
basis or a class may be regularly scheduled to meet in a lab or cluster.
Since this use lessens or precludes use by others, it should be done only
when you deem it to be in the best educational interest of students in your
classes.
Reserving Labs
Reservations are made by contacting the Lab Manager (ext. 4035) or the
Administrative Assistant (ext. 7824), and will be confirmed and placed on
the posted schedule. When reserving labs, this does not guarantee that all
software will available for use. The policy for making reservations and
resolving conflicts has been developed by the Academic Computing Advisory
Committee (ACAC) and is detailed below.
- Instructional use will have priority over all other uses of the
microcomputer labs. Use for regular, credit courses will have priority over
other instructional uses, such as non-credit courses and workshops.
- Reservations for weekly use during a semester, summer term, or short
course will be made at least a month in advance of the course or term. These
will normally be for one hour sessions, but not to exceed two hours or the
length of one normal class period.
- All weekly reservations will be honored on a first-come, first-serve
basis. If conflicts cannot be otherwise resolved, pursuant to item number
"6".
- If it is desired to use the lab for more than one session per week of
the same class, all sessions beyond the one per week will be given lower
priority in scheduling. Such additional reservations will not be confirmed
until the passage of the one-month deadline and then only if the scheduling
of the additional time does not unduly restrict practice time for students
in other classes.
- For single occasion use, reservations should be made at least a week in
advance and will not be confirmed for more than two hours in length.
Requests for more than the two hours will be honored, but on a non-confirmed
basis.
- In case of unresolvable conflicts, the School of Business will have
priority in reserving the lab located in School of Business, with the ASBE
department within that school given higher priority for room 307. The School
of Education will have priority for the lab in SE-120. However, these
priorities are valid only for one reservation per week for the same class.
- If all the stations in a lab are not being used by the class for which
the lab was reserved, the Information Technology Labs staff will permit
other persons to use the spare machines during classes, with the provision
that those persons do nothing to disturb the class (including avoiding the
use of printers during class time). The one exception to this rule will be
in the case of scheduled finals for which the lab will be closed to all
except the instructor (or proctor) and members of the class.
- Reservations for summer courses are to be made a week in advance of the
submission of summer schedules to the deans and for no more than one
three-hour or two two-hour sessions per day. Additional time may be
permitted if the labs are free, but it will not be committed in advance.
Reservations requested after the advance requests are confirmed will be
honored only as unreserved time is available.
- It will be the practice of Information Technology to open a lab to
general use if the instructor has not appeared by ten minutes after the
beginning of the reservation. Please let us know at least 24 hours in
advance when they will not need to use reserved labs.
