Laptop Minimum Hardware Specifications

ISU is a laptop institution which means you are required to have a laptop when you enroll at ISU. The information below is provided for students that already have a laptop to make certain it will meet their academic requirements.

ISU recommends the following laptop minimum specifications if you are purchasing or bringing a laptop to campus:

Operating System

Windows 7 or higher

Processor Speed

2.0GHz Dual Core Processor or higher

Memory

4Gb Memory

Storage/Hard Drive Size

120 GB Hard Drive or higher

Wireless

Wireless Connectivity (802.11 a/g minimum)

Laptop Condition

Working with no errors during startup and use

Battery

In good working condition

Antivirus

Symantec antivirus can be downloaded from ISU at no additional cost

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office can be downloaded from ISU at no additional cost

In case you have problems

All disks that came with the laptop - if available

Do NOT get a Chromebook, Steam Machine, or other browser-based device for your academic work. While these devices look like a bargain, they are not able to run many required programs.

Purchasing or bringing a laptop to campus is okay and the Technology Support Center will help to support you from a software perspective, but it could be an issue if the laptop experiences hardware problems. The Technology Support Center provides hardware support for the recommended laptops, but cannot provide hardware support for other laptops. Also, if the Technology Support Center has to reformat a non-recommended model there is a $30 charge.

If your laptop does not meet the minimum requirements above, here are other options you can pursue:

  1. Qualify and Receive a Scholarship Laptop

To see if you qualify to receive a scholarship laptop, please visit http://www.indstate.edu/scholarships/freshman/laptop.htm.  The laptop comes with a 1 year warranty on the battery and the power cord and a 3 year warranty and Accidental Damage Protection plan.  The Technology Support Center, located in the basement of Stalker Hall, provides full hardware and software support for your new laptop.  It comes standard with an ISU software image that has everything you need for your academic success. And parents will have peace of mind, knowing their student has the expertise of the Computer Support Center right here on campus to assist with computer issues.

  2. Purchase the Recommended Laptop

Purchase the recommended laptop and receive the same support as the Scholarship Laptop.  The laptop comes with a 1 year warranty on the battery and the power cord and a 3 year warranty and Accidental Damage Protection plan.  The Technology Support Center, located in the basement of Stalker Hall, provides full hardware and software support for your new laptop including adding the standard ISU software image that has everything you need for your academic success. And parents will have peace of mind, knowing their student has the expertise of the Technology Support Center right here on campus to assist with computer issues.  To purchase a recommended laptop go to http://www.indstate.edu/oit/students/laptoprecommend.php.

  3. Rent a Laptop from ISU

Rent a laptop directly from ISU that will serve all of your academic needs and receive the award winning hardware and software support from the Technology Support Center at no additional cost, just like the first two options.  New rental laptops comes with a 1 year warranty on the battery and the power cord and a 4 year warranty and Accidental Damage Protection plan.  New laptop rental fees are $125 per semester; after renting the same laptop for 8 consecutive semesters (4 years) the ownership of the laptop will be transferred to the student.

A limited number of USED laptops are also available to rent for $100 per semester.  These also have a rent to own option – rent the same laptop for 6 consecutive semesters (3 years) and ownership will be transferred to the student.  Used laptops have a one year warranty on the battery and power cord and the balance of the original warranty and Accidental Damage Protection plan.

You can find more information about the program at http://www.indstate.edu/oit/students/laptop-rental.php.
