Backing up data using Windows Backup

To help ensure that you don't lose your files, you should back them up regularly to some place other than your computer’s internal hard drive. You can set up automatic backups or manually back up your files at any time. This back up of your work can be restored in the event of a hardware or software failure of your ISU-owned computer.

Following the steps contained in this document you will be able to create a backup of the your personal files on your computer, which can be restored in the event of a hard drive failure or other catastrophic event affecting your computer.

Things you will need:

An external hard drive large enough to hold all of the files and settings on the computer you wish to backup.

Creating your backup:

Follow the steps below to create your backup using Windows Backup.

  1. Begin by clicking the Start button located in the lower left corner of your screen.

  2. Click on Control Panel.

  3. Under System and Security, click on Back up your computer.

  4. Select Set up backup.

  5. Wait for Windows Backup to start, which may take several seconds.

  6. Choose your external hard drive as the Backup destination.

  7. You may select what items you wish to backup, or you may Let Windows choose (recommended).

  8. Review your backup settings, then click Save settings and run backup.

  9. The Back up or restore your files page will display the status of your backup in progress..

  10. Windows Backup will indicate when it has completed the backup of your files.
