Should I Use the Virtual or Rental Copy of SPSS?

There are two options for your students to access SPSS at ISU:

  • Rent a copy at a cost through the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at http://thinkedu.com/bn/
  • Virtual access at no cost through the MyISU Portal

The following information will assist you in selecting the virtual or rental version of SPSS for your students. It is possible that you could choose a combination of virtual and rental to best fit the needs of your students
A properly functioning student computer is a must no matter which option is chosen:

  • Student computers should
    • boot up without errors
    • run without errors
    • If students are local and experiencing problems with their computers they can stop by the basement of Stalker Hall room 009 and have the staff look at it
    • If students are not local and experiencing problems with their computers they should take their computers to a local computer shop in their area to have it serviced

Rent SPSS (cost)
Rent a copy of SPSS through the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at http://thinkedu.com/bn/ for your students for all situations below:

  • Your students need to access SPSS without an internet connection
  • Your students need to cut and paste data from SPSS to other programs (e.g. Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Your students need to save files to their local hard drive
  • Your students need to print to a printer connected to their computer

Virtual SPSS (no cost)
Use the virtual copy of SPSS for your students for all other scenarios:

  • All your students are connected to the Internet to access SPSS
  • All your students must save files directly to a class folder or their network storage space
  • All your students need to only print to the ISU student printers on campus

To request class access to virtual SPSS the Technology Support Center will need the MyISU University Username, University ID Number, course name and section number of anyone who requires access.
